NOISY ELLIPTICALS
Elliptical cross trainers are primarily mechanical devices (that also contain electronic) that have many moving parts, such as, crank arms, tie rods, bearings, bushings, flywheels, alternators, drive belts, sheaves, pedal arms, etc. With all of these moving parts, you can't expect an elliptical to be silent.
While some noise is acceptable, sudden new noises,
clunking noises or grinding sounds are usually a sign that something is wrong.
These kinds of noises don't go away by themselves and should be corrected
before they cause major damage to the elliptical. Typically, the longer such
noises are ignored, the more damage that will be done, leading to higher
repair costs.
Of course, using an elliptical at very high rates of
speed will also cause various noises, but that is not unusual, nor a sign
of trouble. Most elliptical cross trainer work well up to about eighty strides
per minute. Beyond that it is not unusual for a properly functioning elliptical
to click, bang and clunk.
